The higher heat and humidity Wednesday and Thursday will be a practice round for the heat wave that is coming our way next week.

The main difference between now and then will be the risk of strong afternoon thunderstorms. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon both come with the risk of strong storms that will be capable of producing rainfall rates of more than 1-2 inches per hour as well as damaging straight-line wind gusts.

Our ground is already close to saturated so urban and flash flooding will be a concern. As temperatures and humidity levels rise, the heat index will become more of a concern.

The heat index will peak around 95° on Wednesday but will be closer to 100° for several hours Thursday afternoon. Stay weather aware with our free NBCWashington app, should any watches or warnings are issued in your area.

A cold front passing through Thursday afternoon will bring some temporary relief.

Temps to heat back up to lead to heat wave

Friday will be seasonably warm and sunny with much lower humidity levels. Friday may also turn out the be our last day with a high below 90° until the weekend after this one!

Most areas will get back to around 90° on Saturday with a modest increase in humidity. The full power of the heat wave begins on Sunday when highs get back around 95° and the heat index nears 100°.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be the crest of the heat wave. Daytime highs around 100°, midday heat indices around 105° and overnight lows struggling to get below 80° with no chances for a cooling thunderstorm.

Many June heat records will be tied or broken next week. This is definitely not the best way to head into July which is usually the hottest month of the year.
