Grandmother shot and killed inside Landover home while babysitting

The family believes someone may have mistakenly targeted the house thinking someone else lived there, but it's still not clear who opened fire or why

A 54-year-old reverend was shot and killed inside her Landover, Maryland, home over the weekend as she babysat her grandchildren, family members tell News4. The shooter is still on the loose.

Rev. Leslie Yvette Davis was having a sleepover for Mother's Day with her four young grandkids, her family members said. When her daughters went to pick up their children Saturday afternoon, they found two of the children — 6-year-old twins — walking around the house, saying their grandma was dead.

Davis’ daughters then discovered her body in her bedroom. She had been fatally shot. Two other grandchildren, ages 10 months and 2 years old, were found unharmed in the bedroom with their grandmother’s body.

A Landover woman found dead inside her home Saturday afternoon may have been shot several hours earlier. News4’s Paul Wagner reports.

Her family said they're devastated by the loss.

"It doesn't feel real," said Billie Davis, one of her daughters. "I haven't been to sleep. Can't eat. Every time I close my eyes, you know, I just see my mom how I found her."

It is still not clear what happened, and no arrests have been made. The family said they believe someone may have mistakenly targeted the victim's house, thinking someone else lived there. Prince George's County police said they don't believe the shooting is random, but the investigation is ongoing.

Davis was heavily involved in her church community, her family said.

“Beautiful, kind, loving, God-fearing," Davis’ daughter said. "My mom was just all-around a good person. She would literally give you the clothes off her back, the food off her plate."

“Somebody took my baby, my firstborn,” Davis’ mom said. “I just don't know how to explain the hurt that I'm feeling. I really don't.”

The entire Davis family is extremely close. Five generations of family members all live near each other and love visiting and spending time together.

The family told News4 they're hurting and desperately hoping for answers.

"If anybody out there does know anything, I just encourage people to speak up. Because my mom didn't deserve this," her daughter said.
